Reading Strategies

Visualizing to make sense of text and make informal use of schema and inference

Identifying important ideas in a story

Chunky Monkey - Look for small "chunks" you know inside of bigger words.
Flip Flop Froggy - "Flip Flop" the vowel sound. If you tried the word using a short vowel sound, try the word using a long vowel instead. Reread the word. Does it make sense?

Phonics

Jolly Phonics - "ck"

The test on these words will be on Friday, November 22nd.
*Your students brought home their spelling test today - please make sure to review it with them and help them correct the words that they missed. It is very important that they study their words every night.

Math

This week we continued to work on fact families and related facts. Next week we will review all of the strategies that we have done since the beginning of the year. We will look over and discuss different strategies for addition and subtraction as well as missing numbers, related facts, and fact families. Students will be taking their first math test on Friday, November 22nd. The test will cover addition and subtraction - students will be able to complete the test using which ever strategy works best for them. Please continue to work with them at home on their math facts!

Reading Log
November calendars went home last week - please continue to read every night and record their books. Calendars will be due when we get BACK from Thanksgiving break so that students can record what they read while we have a few days off! :)

Reminders/Announcements

• Box Tops - Please continue to turn in any box tops that you have at home. This is a wonderful fundraiser that helps raise money for our school. Feel free to ask aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and neighbors! :) Classrooms with the most box tops will win a classroom party!
• Please send a note if your child will be picked up or taking another bus home.

• Please continue to practice sight words at home. Making flash cards is a great idea and allows for fun games, like memory!
