Week of Sept. 15th - Sept. 19th

Week of Sept. 8th - Sept. 12th
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the parents that were able to make it to Curriculum Night on Wednesday. I enjoyed seeing everyone and meeting those that I did not get to meet at Open House. Please let me know if you have any further questions!
I still have openings for classroom parties as well as helping out with food/drinks. I will be sending a separate email with those details this weekend.

Looking Ahead
Sept. 15th - Sept. 19th

Reading Strategies
Predicting & Evaluating - Before reading a story we look at the front and back cover to predict what the story might be about. Then the students evaluate it by giving a thumbs up if they liked it, thumb to the side if it was so-so, and a thumbs down if they didn't care for it.
Making Connections - When the students are reading a story, we will try to relate to the text by making a "text to self" connection.
Lips the Fish - Get your lips ready and make the beginning sound of the word.
Review: Skippy Scott - Skip over the word when you are not sure what it is (come back to it after reading the sentence).
Eagle Eye - Use your eagle eye and look at the pictures when you are not sure of a word (using pictures to help decode the text).

Phonics
Jolly Phonics - "ch" digraph sound

Math
We continued with our math unit this week on addition. The students learned how to make addition problems using counters and pictures in order to explore. We took our first assessment on addition today and the students will get their results next week! We will be starting our next unit which will include finding the "missing part" of an addition sentence.

Reading/Daily 5
We will continue to work on the different daily 5 centers. We will begin work on computers this week and get a chance to do a full rotation of read to self, read to someone, work on words, and work on computers.

If you are interested in learning more about the Daily 5 and seeing what your student does during this time then please join us at Ide Literacy Night on October 7th. Click the link and sign up with your son/daughter!

Homework
Each student will bring homework home every night in their PURPLE folder. Please remember that it is due the next morning. There will always be a math sheet that reviews what we have completed in class, as well as a reading log that should stay in their folder at all times. It is important for your student to read every night and record the book/pages/chapters on their log. Homework is not used as an assessment, but for a completion grade. If a student does not complete their class work in the classroom, their sheet will be sent home with an "H" on it and that will also count as homework due the following day.

Scholastic Books!
I have created a link on my blog to Scholastic book orders! If you are interested in ordering any books for friends, relatives, or for your student, feel free to place an order online and use the code - LVB2T. When you order online, you can shop all Book Club flyers, enter your online orders, and pay with a credit or debit card. Every time you place your order online, you earn a FREE Book Pick and I earn a $3 coupon for our classroom! I will be receiving flyers that I will send home within the next few weeks if you don't want to do it online. If you have any questions please let me know!

Important Dates
  • Tuesday, Sept. 16th - Magazine Drive Kick Off
  • Thursday, Sept. 18th - PTO Book Fair & Ice Cream Social 6:30 - 8pm
  • Thursday, Sept. 25th - Early Dismissal @ 12:00pm

Reminders/Announcements
  • Box Tops - Please continue to turn in any box tops that you have at home. This is a wonderful fundraiser that helps raise money for our school. Feel free to ask aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and neighbors! :)
  • Sight Words - Students brought home 6 sight words last week. They are the words that they need to know for the week. Next week there are 6 new words. Please continue to work with your student at home.
  • Jolly Phonics Dictation - As part of our Jolly Phonics curriculum, each student will be doing weekly dictation activities that include our lesson for the week. The dictation will help your child make connections between what they are learning in class and what they already know in order to complete their spelling tests. This will not be for a grade - but more for an assessment on how they are learning their letter sounds and using them to incorporate into their spelling and writing.
  • Please send a note if your child will be picked up or taking another bus home.
  • If you have any questions - please feel free to email me at alibeseth@ccsd66.org

I Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Miss Beseth
