Week of April 15th - April 19th
What a crazy week! The students have been working hard, learning about the life cycle of a chicken. We have discussed incubators, eggs, chicks, as well as the difference between a hen and a rooster. We are lucky to have 14 eggs in our incubator that the students get to look at everyday! They don't do much now, but in about 8 days we are hoping that most, if not all, hatch (my fingers are crossed). We had a women named Mrs. Fish come on Friday and give a little presentation to the first grade students. She owns her own chickens, and most of the eggs that we have in our incubators are from her. The students enjoyed listening to the different things that she had to say. She also brought in three of her own hens so that the students could pet them and feel their feathers. This next week, we will continue to talk about the life cycle and complete a few projects!

Math
In math, we have been working on addition and subtraction. We have discussed different strategies that the students can use in order to find the sum or difference of basic facts. Please make sure to practice math facts at home each night!
Reading Calendars
Please continue to read for 20 minutes each night with your student. We will continue to do reading calendars through the month of May, but March was the last month for pizza tickets.
Staley the Bear Assembly
On Wednesday, April 17th, Staley, the Chicago Bear's mascot, came to our school and presented an assembly on bullying. He and his assistant helped the students to describe what bullying was and what they should do if it happens to them. The students learned a lot and we will make sure to practice those strategies at school!
Ide Open House/Book Fair
Our Open House/Book Fair will be held on Thursday, April 25th. All family members are welcome to come check out our classroom and to buy books. I hope to see you all there!
Movie
This week a permission slip was sent home in order for your student to watch the movie, Fly Away Home, in class. The entire first grade will be watching it together to go along with our chick unit. Please send the permission slip back to school no later than Thursday, April 25th. Thank you!
Chick Update
Last week, we got to candle some of our eggs to see whether or not an embryo was growing. We used an overhead projector and a very dark room. We were able to see the air cell, veins and an embryo moving around. Ask your child to tell you about it!
