Reading Strategies

*Wondering (questioning) - is a strategy that good readers use to construct understanding. We are going to "wonder" and ask questions to focus our reading and clarify meaning. We will ask questions before, during and after to help make sense of the text.

The test on these words will be on Friday, January 24th.
*Your students brought home their spelling test today - please make sure to review it with them and help them correct the words that they missed. It is very important that they study their words every night.

Math

This past week, students compared 2-digit numbers, found which is less/greater and used the symbols <,>, = to record comparisons. Next week, we will continue to work on the same concepts. Students should be able to describe the comparison process and explain their logic.

Report Card Envelopes

If your student has not yet returned their signed report card envelope, please send it in as soon as possible. We have to use them for the 2nd Trimester report cards! Thank you!

I have created a link on my blog to Scholastic book orders! Box Top Celebration :)

I am happy to announce that we won a celebration for having the most Box Tops turned in before winter break in first grade! The class is so excited and after much debate, (they always have such interesting and funny ideas for celebrations) they have voted on ice cream sandwiches. We will have the celebration on Wednesday, January 22nd.

Progress Reports

Progress Reports will be going home on Friday, January 24th. Just a reminder that only students who are NOT MEETING in an area at this time will get a report. This is not their 2nd Trimester grade, but it is important to look over with your child. It also lets me know which areas to focus more on an individual basis if your student is struggling. If your student is meeting in all areas, then they will not receive a report on Friday. If you have any questions please let me know!

Reminders/Announcements

• Box Tops - Please continue to turn in any box tops that you have at home. This is a wonderful fundraiser that helps raise money for our school. Feel free to ask aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and neighbors! :) Classrooms with the most box tops will win a classroom party!
• Please send a note if your child will be picked up or taking another bus home.

• Please continue to practice sight words at home. Making flash cards is a great idea and allows for fun games, like memory!
• It's that time of year! Please make sure you are sending your student to school with a hat, gloves, and scarves! If the temperature is above 30 degrees, the kids will go outside for recess and I would hate for them to freeze. :)
• January Scholastic catalogs went home last week. If you are interested in ordering books please check out the link above! :) A few parents have ordered and it is super easy! When parents order online, I also get points to purchase books for the classroom! :)
