I just wanted to mention a quick thanks to all the parents that were able to attend Curriculum Night. For those of you that could not make it, don't worry your student has all of the handouts in their green folder! :) There was a list of sign up sheets for room parents, parties, and multiple PTO events that were not taken so I will send an email out to see if anyone would like to volunteer for those spots. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email! - alibeseth@ccsd66.org
Here are a few things that have gone on in the classroom this past week!
Our Author of the Month for September is Eric Carle! The students had a blast reading Mister Seahorse and then painting with watercolors. Each seahorse is so colorful!
We read The Grouchy Ladybug! The students loved making their own ladybug and were so excited when they walked into the classroom and saw theirs hanging above their desk!
A House for Hermit Crab was another book that we read this past week by Eric Carle! The students were shocked when I told them that they were finger painting (I was shocked too - since I was wearing white!). Each student enjoyed decorating their "shell" and drawing the ocean floor on their paper. They turned out amazing!
~Looking Ahead~
Week of Sept. 10th - Sept. 14th
Reading Strategies
We are beginning to working on comprehension strategies while reading aloud in the classroom. The first two strategies that we will focus on are predicting and evaluating. It is important to look at the front & back cover of the book and use the title to predict what you think the story might be about before you read it. Once we are finished reading, and the students have a chance to share what they think, they then will evaluate the story and tell each other whether they loved it, liked it or didn’t care for the book at all. Each student will have the chance to share their opinions about why they feel certain ways towards different books. Try to use these same strategies when you are reading with your child at home.
Phonics
“sh” digraph sound
Grammar
Capital Letters
Spelling Words
Our first spelling test is next Friday, Sept. 14th. The words are:
am get clap ship fish
shut wish I the shampoo
Math
The students have been exploring different ways of counting from 1-12. After demonstrating their understanding of counting concepts, we will begin to explore relationships between numbers.
Your child took their first chapter test on Friday and will be sent home next week. Please remember to sign the green cover page and return it so that I know you saw your child's math work. Make sure to complement your child on their test, and talk through the problems that they might have missed. It is important for them to see that connection between home and school.
We will continue with chapter 2 on addition next week.
Date Reminders
- Magazine Drive Assembly
- Ide Book Fair & Ice Cream Social - Sept. 13th
- Picture Day - Sept. 27th
- Early Dismissal - Sept. 28th
Special Reminders
- Homework will come home next Thursday marked with an “H.” Students need to return their homework by Friday or Monday. Remember that homework is a link between home and school. Homework reinforces what was taught at school and is not an assessment. Homework will be checked in when its completed but not returned home.
- Our first spelling test is next Friday. I will always list the new spelling words over the weekend so that if you want to get a head start reviewing the words with your child, you can.
- Please send in your Box Tops!
Thanks! I look forward to the new week ahead! :)
